UN chief condemns Russia’s plan to annex Ukrainian regions | United Nations News

UN Secretary-Common Antonio Guterres says Russian annexation of Ukraine areas would mark ‘harmful escalation’.

Russia’s plan to annex four Ukrainian regions would mark a “harmful escalation” within the war in Ukraine that will jeopardise the prospects for peace, the United Nations secretary-general has warned.

“Any choice to proceed with the annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia areas of Ukraine would don’t have any authorized worth and deserves to be condemned,” Antonio Guterres informed reporters on the UN headquarters in New York Metropolis on Thursday.

Greater than seven months since invading neighbouring Ukraine, Russia is poised to annex the 4 Ukrainian areas after holding referendums there over the previous week that had been slammed by the federal government in Kyiv and its Western allies as unlawful.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin would signal the annexation treaties on Friday.
